Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

What is Ten Ring Junior Shooters?

Ten Ring Junior Shooters is a youth-focused precision shooting club that teaches firearm safety, marksmanship, and discipline through structured training and competition.

Read more on our About page.

What types of firearms do participants use?

We primarily use air rifles and air pistols appropriate for junior shooting sports. Younger and less-experienced shooters will use “sporter” rifles while older and more-experienced shooters progress to using “precision” rifles. All equipment is selected for safety and age-appropriate training.

Is this a competitive team or recreational club?

Both. We welcome beginners and offer opportunities to compete in local, regional, and postal matches for those interested.

Eligibility & Membership

What ages can join?

Our program is designed for youth ages 10 to 18. However, an athlete’s eligibility is determined based on maturity and readiness.

If your child is interested and you think that he or she has the patience and maturity to safely accept coaching in the sport, we’d love to have them come give it a try.

Do participants need prior experience with firearms?

No experience is necessary. All members begin with safety instruction and fundamentals of marksmanship.

Is this a co-ed club?

Yes. Boys and girls are equally encouraged to join and participate.

Safety & Supervision

What safety measures are in place?

Safety is our highest priority. All training is led by certified instructors and range safety officers. Firearms are handled under strict supervision using nationally recognized safety protocols.

Are parents required to be present during practice?

While not required, parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged, especially for younger participants.

Training & Practice

When do practices take place?

Practices are typically held 1-2 times per week, depending on the athlete’s age and/or skill level. There are additional opportunities for matches and special events outside of weekly practices.

Our standard “season” starts in the fall and runs through early spring. Exact start and end dates of the season as well as practice nights are determined prior to each season based on competition dates and coach availability.

Where are practices held?

Practices take place at the newly-developed Liberty Youth Shooting Sports Complex at the Deer Creek Shooting Range which is owned and managed by the Western Montana Fish and Game Association (WMFGA).

Cost & Equipment

What are the costs involved?

We strive to keep costs low. Annual dues are $325, which covers range membership, range time, coaching, basic equipment use, and insurance. Competitions may have additional costs including entry fees, travel, meals, and lodging.

Costs are reduced for those who are already members of the WMFGA.

Do I need to purchase a rifle or gear?

No, at least not initially. The club has a variety of air rifles, shooting equipment, and safety gear available for use by new members. Advanced shooters may wish to invest in their own gear over time.

What should my athlete bring to practice?

Comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes (not covering the ankle bone for those shooting “sporter”), water (in a bottle with a screw lid), and a positive attitude.

If athletes have their own safety or shooting gear, they are welcome to bring it to have it inspected and approved by a coach before use.

Competitions & Advancement

Are competitions mandatory?

No. Participation in matches is encouraged but optional. We support both recreational shooters and those interested in high-level competition.

Ten Ring Junior Shooters has produced a number of internationally-recognized shooters, and the expectation is that athletes will progress to a level in which they feel comfortable competing over time.

Can participants earn awards or rankings?

Yes. Members can earn medals, patches, and recognized certifications based on performance and participation in sanctioned events.

Volunteer & Support

How can I get involved as a parent or volunteer?

We welcome volunteers to assist with coaching, administration, event planning, and fundraising.

Do you accept donations or sponsorships?

Yes! We’re a community-supported organization. Donations and local sponsorships help fund equipment, range time, travel, and scholarships.
